Kate

Kate is a free and open-source source code editor that has several different display modes. The program is specially geared to development, with specific features such as code folding, syntax highlighting, dynamic line justification and embedded command console, among others. All of which is available through a relatively intuitive interface.

Customize your interface

The first thing to do before you start using Kate is create a comfortable interface that suits your needs. Fortunately, the program has many options for this. You can customize the interface from the Settings and Tools tabs, and choose from several different color schemes, enable or disable various toolbars and also display the command console. You can even choose which part of the interface you want the console to appear or if you want to split it into several views.

A powerful tool for programming

The range of features in Kate is enormous. To begin with, the program features syntax highlighting for over 300 file formats, with code and text folding rules. The software also supports character encoding formats, such as UTF-8, UTF-16, ISO-8859-1 and ASCII, and can detect the character encoding of a file automatically. It also has a code completion tool and a reference finder in several different programming languages. The default configuration supports C, C++, D, Fortran, Go, Latex, Python, Rust and OCaml.

Other useful features

In addition to the features already mentioned, Kate will allow you to perform much more mundane, but equally useful, operations. For example, you can undo and redo as much as you need, without any limits. You can also use the block selection mode and customize your keyboard shortcuts, and from the Settings tab, you can add as many keyboard shortcuts as you want.
